Movie Night

Wed Aug 10 6:00pm
Malden Public Library
36 Salem Street

Join us for Movie Night on Wednesday August 10, 2016 from 6:00-8:30pm. We will be showing a recent biographical film about Jesse Owens during the 1936 Berlin Olympics, where “Race” becomes a divisive issue in Hitler’s Germany. The movie stars Stephen James, Jason Sudeikis, Jeremy Irons, and William Hurt. The movie is based on the true story of Jesse Owens, an African-American athletic superstar, whose quest to become the greatest track and field athlete in history, thrusts him onto the world stage of the 1936 Olympics. Richard Roeper writes, “Race tells the story of a brave and gifted and determined man who accomplished great feats during a pivotal moment in world history.”
Of local Malden history interest is the fact that a woman from Malden became one of the first African-American women to go to the Olympics to compete in track and field. Although her life is not depicted in the movie, Louise Stokes was born in Malden, MA in 1913, attended Malden High School, and was one of two African-American women in track to go to the 1936 Berlin Olympics. The people of Malden raised money for her to go to Berlin, where because of extreme bias and prejudice, she was not allowed to compete. She remains a little-known local hero. This film is free and open to the public and is accessible. Movie times are approximate. Please call the Malden Public Library at 781-324-0218 for more information. Rated PG-13 (135 min.)
