Movie Night
2/15/2017 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM
Join us for Movie Night at the Library on Wednesday, February 15, 2017, from 6:00-8:00pm. We will be showing a recent movie about the Loving family, whose US Supreme Court civil rights case, Loving v. Virginia, invalidated the laws prohibiting interracial marriage in 1967. The film stars, Ruth Negga and Joel Edgerton and is directed by Jeff Nichols. Ruth Negga was just nominated for an Oscar for the Best Actress in a leading role.
Richard Loving and Mildred Jeter are a young interracial couple in love in late 1950s Virginia, where it is illegal for them to marry due to the state’s anti-miscegenation law, which prohibited people classified as “white” from marrying people classified as “black.” Eighteen and pregnant, Mildred and Richard go to Washington DC, where they can get legally married, only to find when they return to Virginia that their marriage license is invalidated and they are sent to jail. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch writes, “A beautiful film about daring to love, without fear or compromise.” BET writes, “[the film] is arguably one of the best films of 2016.”
Rotten Tomatoes gives the film an 89% approval rating, The Washington Post gives the film 4 stars and The New Yorker calls the movie “A landmark film.”
This film is free and open to the public and is accessible. Movie times are approximate. Please call the Malden Public Library at 781-324-0218 for more information. Rated PG-13 (123 min.)
