Tyrus Film
3/17/2017 7:00 PM - 9:00 AM
Tyrus
Please join us on Friday, March 17 at 7:00 pm at the Malden Senior Community Center (7 Washington St.) for another screening in the Malden Reads' 2017 film series. The film is Tyrus, and it tells the life story of Tyrus Wong, the man behind the original artwork for Walt Disney's Bambi. This event is co-sponsored by the Chinese Culture Connection as part of their East Meets West cultural dialogue program and will include a tribute to Mr. Wong, who died recently at the age of 106. Wong's American experience began at nine years old when he arrived and was held at the immigration detention center at Angel Island in 1919 under the Chinese Exclusion Act. His story is one of perseverance and commitment to his art as he overcame poverty and discrimination to become a renowned painter, designer, ceramicist, muralist, and lithographer. Beyond producing the the beautifully textured brush strokes that enliven the setting for Bambi, Wong was also influential in creating the looks of many other films, including Warner Brothers' Around the World in Eighty Days. One of the artistic achievements for which he was most beloved was his kite design, a talent which was often on display over the last 30 years of his life on the beaches around Santa Barbara, CA, where he lived.
The documentary picks up on many of the themes of this year’s Malden Reads book choice, A Man Called Ove, by Fredrik Backman, a book about an older man who finds support in his neighborhood in and unlikely group of people. The two works share themes of resilience, openness to change, and the power of diversity. We look forward to seeing you at the this free event. A discussion will follow the screening.
