Mayor Gary Christenson and the City of Malden will once again be rolling out the red carpet for the special athletes competing in the Medford Invitational Tournament’s 13th Annual Challenger Day. The games will take place on Sunday, August 4, 2019 at 1PM on Bruce Field, adjacent to the Irish American Club, 177 West Street, Malden. The Medford Invitational Challenger Day offers children with disabilities the opportunity to take the field and play baseball.
The game has all the fanfare of a major league all-star game where state and local government officials, the Malden Police and Fire Department Color Guards, Wally the Green Monster, Blades the Bruins Bear, and hundreds of fans come together to cheer on these young athletes. This year the program has grown and more than 75 participants from Medford, Malden, Wakefield, Lynn, Billerica and other surrounding cities will be taking part. Particularly exciting this year is that Todd Angilly of the Boston Bruins will kick of the festivities by singing the National Anthem. Event sponsors include Pizzeria Regina, Teamsters Local 25, Wegmans, Kelly’s Roast Beef, and Xerox.
“I’m honored that our City continues to host this great event,” said Mayor Gary Christenson. “I commend Ron Giovino and all the volunteers for their commitment and hard work in making this game possible. The athletes are truly an inspiration to us all!”
