Film Screening of "Miss Evers' Boys"
4/7/2014 1:00 PM - 2:30 PM
The Malden Reads series of free film screenings continues with “Miss Evers' Boys” which will be shown Monday, April 7, at 1 p.m. at the Malden Senior Community Center.
Miss Evers’ Boys is the true story of the US Government's 1932 Tuskegee Syphilis Experiments, in which a group of black test subjects were allowed to die, despite a cure having been developed. The film follows a nurse (played by Alfre Woodard) who cared for those men (one played by Lawrence Fishburne) during the fatal experiment.
An HBO original movie, the film was nominated for 11 Emmys, winning Best Made For Television movie and a Best Movie Actress award for Woodard.
All films in the series highlight themes from the community read’s 2014 featured selection The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot. It’s the true story about a woman who was virtually unknown before the book, and yet her cells — which were taken without her knowledge over 60 years ago — have been one of the most important tools in the field of medicine. Major themes of the book include economic injustice, ethics of modern medicine and extraordinary contributions from seemingly ordinary people.
A discussion of the film’s themes will follow the screening.
This is a special daytime event offering, for those whose schedules favor this time frame. It is part of the regular series of film screenings held at the Malden Senior Community Center.
Hope to see you there. Bring a friend!

A Taste of Malden
4/7/2014 5:30 PM - 8:30 PM
The Malden Chamber of Commerce is hosting an opportunity to sample the city’s varied cuisine scene.
A Taste of Malden will be held at the YMCA, 99 Dartmouth St., from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Monday, April 7. Tickets are $25, $5 for children 12 and under and can be purchased at the Malden Chamber of Commerce website, www.maldenchamber.org, or by calling 781-322-4500.
More than 25 area vendors will be represented at the fifth annual Taste of Malden on Monday, April 7. The event combines food, drink, live music, and several raffles.
Chamber Executive Director Jenna Coccimiglio said the annual event provides the city’s many eateries a space to show off their selections, while also providing new restaurants a chance to garner attention.
"We have some new restaurants that we are really excited about," said Coccimiglio. "This gives them an opportunity to showcase their specialties."
New vendors this year include Tornado Restaurant, a high end Asian-inspired tapas eatery, as well as Boston Yogurt, Cuban Cafe, The Roving Lunch Box and Stock Pot. Exchange Street Bistro, and All Seasons Table are among the many established vendors appearing again this year.
Coccimiglio said the event is all about showcasing what these local establishments have to offer. .
"Malden…has an amazing array and selection of restaurants, and it’s extremely important to highlight them and get our restaurants exposure to people who don’t normally drive or walk down those streets," said Coccimiglio.
A portion of admission ticket revenue will be donated to the local nonprofit Bread of Life, which supports a variety of anti-poverty programs in the Malden and surrounding communities.
There will also be a raffle to support Malden Chamber of Commerce Scholarships. These academic scholarships are granted to high school students nominated by the schools.

Panel Discussion
4/7/2014 7:00 PM - 9:30 PM
Do you wonder why some people don’t get proper access to healthcare or legal services? Is it lack of funds? Education? Prejudice? Time constraints? Distorted perspectives within the health and legal professions? Why, in a country rich in so many ways, does the system leave so many people behind?
Malden Reads has organized a panel of experts to help our community look at the inequalities in healthcare and legal services using the story of Henrietta Lacks as a lens through which to gain perspective. What has changed since the 1950s and what has not? What are some people and organizations doing to shore up these inequities?
The panel discussion is open to the public and will take place on Wednesday, April 9th at 7pm, at the Malden Public Library in the Maccario Room.
Our distinguished guests will be Howard Mandell, former Board Chairperson at Southern Poverty Law Center and Rabbi at Congregation Beth Israel of the Merrimack Valley; Julie Palmer, ScD, Co-Principal Investigator of the Black Women’s Health Study and Professor of Epidemiology, Slone Epidemiology Center at Boston University; and Danielle O'Banion, MD, Cambridge Health Alliance Family Medicine Resident.
The moderator for this panel discussion will be Suzanne Koven, MD, internist at Massachusetts General Hospital and writer for various publications including the Boston Globe’s “In Practice” column where she two years ago published an article entitled “Why Henrietta Lacks Matters”.
To browse articles, panelist bios, and other resources related to this discussion about health and legal services equity, visit the Malden Reads 2014 blog at http://maldenreads.tumblr.com where you can also submit a question before the panel discussion. Questions can also be tweeted @maldenreads with hashtag #mrquestion or emailed to maldenreads@gmail.com.
Hope to see you next Wednesday evening for a deeper exploration of a major theme from this year's book selection. You DON'T need to have read the book to participate and be enriched by the discussion.
