Dessert Theater & Book Unveiling
11/10/2014 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM
Malden Reads will conclude its slate of 2014 programming on Monday, November 10, with dessert theater and a sneak peak of what’s in store for 2015.
This free event invites the community to enjoy a dessert while watching professional actors perform a stage reading of an original play by local playwright Licia Sky.
Co-hosted with the North Shore Black Women's Association, the event will feature a 45-minute dramatization of the Malden Reads 2014 featured selection The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. Written by Rebecca Skloot, the book upon which the play is based is a true story about a woman whose unique cells were collected without her knowledge in 1951 and are still used today in medical research.
Desserts will be provided by Brother Trucker Catering, a division of Stock Pot Malden.
The local non-profit Triangle has provided a venue for the program, at 420 Pearl Street. The show starts at 7 p.m. In addition to the program, Malden Reads will share the new book for the 2015 season. Now in its fifth year, Malden Reads is a grassroots program that invites the community to read the same book and then participate in a series of events based on themes from the book. Previous featured selections include The Soloist, Outcasts United and The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian.
Be among the first to know about the 2015 featured selection. And, in honor of our fifth year, five free copies of the 2015 book selection will be given out as a door prize! To reserve your seat for the event, contact Malden Reads at maldenreads@gmail.com or 781-321-2935. Leave your name, contact info (email or phone #) and number of people in your party.
Monday, November 10 is the night before the Veteran's Day holiday. Hope to see you at the "Dessert Theater" event!

Rededication
11/11/2014 12:00 PM - 12:30 PM
William R. Callahan Park and Memorial Rededication Veterans Day
City leaders and members of the Malden community will gather at William R. Callahan Park on Veterans Day, Tuesday, November 11th at 12:00 Noon at the conclusion of the Veterans Day Parade for the rededication of the William R. “Billy” Callahan Park.
Billy Callahan, born on April 27, 1925, was raised in the Edgeworth section of Malden on Russell Street. In 1950, Billy enlisted in the U.S. Army just before the outbreak of the Korean War. Billy served on the Malden Common Council for two years and then Malden City Council for 14 years. Known to many as Mr. Fourth of July, Billy held tremendous July 4 celebrations at Devir Park during his years on the Council. He also served as a Democratic member of the 16th Middlesex District House of Representatives for one term, from 1971 to 1973. Billy represented Malden with pride and distinction as a member of multiple organizations, including the Knights of Columbus and the Ancient Order of Hibernians.
Billy Callahan came from a proud family of dedicated public servants and veterans who served our nation during some difficult times. His brother Eddie Callahan, a Malden Police Officer and WWII U.S. Navy veteran was killed in 1963 during a robbery at the A&P supermarket. Another brother, Paul Callahan, Colonel U.S. Marine Corps served in Korea as a Marine Officer and was a Malden school teacher, assistant principal as well as a City of Malden Councilor-At-Large, who passed away in 2007. The Callahan boys also had a sister Mae Beaton.
Billy Callahan died on January 22, 1976 at age 50 leaving his wife Ann, daughter MaryAnn and the City of Malden much too early. On July 8, 1978, William R. Callahan Park was dedicated in Billy’s honor to recognize his distinguished service and dedication to the residents of Malden and his country.

Over, Under and In: Using Waterpower along Spot Pond Brook
Thursday, November 13, 2014
Malden Public Library
36 Salem Street, Malden, MA
Water quenched human thirst, beautified land and powered mill machinery for hundreds of years. It was the lifeblood of the regional economy and it was here that the real Industrial Revolution began. Join Ryan Hayward for an exploration of the story of Spot Pond Brook as it was altered and improved to suite the industrial community’s needs of Haywardville, Melrose, and Malden.
This lecture is part of the ongoing series “Industrial Eden: The Legacy of Haywardville,” a yearlong celebration of this now vanished mill village. Haywardville was a mill village located in Stoneham on the border of Melrose, Malden and Medford. Straddling Spot Pond Brook, the village was the site of early industrial development which later blossomed into larger factories. The best known was the Rubber-works which was developed by Nathaniel Hayward. The mills ultimately closed and the site was taken for use as the Middlesex Fells Reservation All buildings were relocated and the site restored to its picturesque appearance which it maintains today. For additional programs see www.preservation-collaborative.com/haywardville.

Auction Fundraiser
11/21/2014 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM
First Parish in hosting a service auction fundraiser at 7 p.m. Nov. 21 in Durgin Hall at the church. What's a service auction? It's a night of fun, dessert and drinks, and the opportunity to bid on some amazing items. More traditional auctions tend to feature physical items you can buy; a service auction, by contrast, has donations of time and skills you can bid on. For instance, our service auction will feature babysitting, home-cooked dinners for four or six, a custom-made knitting project to your specifications, house-cleaning, a weekend getaway, and more. Rev. Christian is donating a sermon topic; you can tell him what to talk about for an upcoming worship service!
Tickets are $10 per person or a maximum of $20 per family, and include complimentary drinks and dessert (please eat dinner before you come!). Childcare will be provided; please let us know when you buy tickets if you plan to use our childcare. To get your ticket or to donate items for the auction, contact Christian at christian.schmidt@afreefaith.com.
