Movie Night
3/11/2020 6:00 PM - 8:30 PM

Malden Reads Movie Night at the Malden Public Library.
Join us at the Malden Public Library’s Malden Reads first film screening for the 2020 book selection, Fahrenheit 451, by Ray Bradbury. We will be showing a movie about a librarian, played by Bette Davis, who is in the middle of a Storm Center. In this 1956 movie, “Bette Davis plays a small town librarian who inspires the joy of reading in children and stands up against book banning during the 1950s. Her refusal to pull a book about communism from the library costs her her job and reputation and eventually triggers a fire in the library. Davis’s character is based on the story of librarian Ruth W. Brown, who was accused of being a communist because of her anti segregation efforts.” A discussion of this year’s Malden Reads book selection, Fahrenheit 451, will follow the movie. This film is free and open to the public and is accessible. For information call 781-324-0218 for more information. Rated PG (85 min.)

Learn Pastels at Malden Public Library
3/12/2020 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Learn the art of pastels with artist Gregory Maichack in this adult art workshop. Call 781-324-0218 to sign up. Space is limited.
In this new, highly researched two-hour workshop, participants have fun producing their own pastel painting inspired by Georgia O’Keeffe’s enormous mural, The Miracle Flower, which Elizabeth Arden, the cosmetics mogul, commissioned her to paint in 1936.
Gregory Maichack is a seasoned pro at teaching pastel techniques, as recognized by the Museum of Fine Arts (MFA) Boston; Massachusetts Cultural Council (MCC), and hundreds of libraries and local cultural councils. He guides participants through the process with everything they need to know to pastel paint any subject. Expressive and fun, you will quickly learn how easy and direct pastel painting is and as always, all will keep their pastel painting.
This event is generously sponsored by the Malden Cultural Council and the Friends of the Malden Public Library.
