Film Screening of "Miss Evers' Boys"
4/7/2014 1:00 PM - 2:30 PM
The Malden Reads series of free film screenings continues with “Miss Evers' Boys” which will be shown Monday, April 7, at 1 p.m. at the Malden Senior Community Center.
Miss Evers’ Boys is the true story of the US Government's 1932 Tuskegee Syphilis Experiments, in which a group of black test subjects were allowed to die, despite a cure having been developed. The film follows a nurse (played by Alfre Woodard) who cared for those men (one played by Lawrence Fishburne) during the fatal experiment.
An HBO original movie, the film was nominated for 11 Emmys, winning Best Made For Television movie and a Best Movie Actress award for Woodard.
All films in the series highlight themes from the community read’s 2014 featured selection The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot. It’s the true story about a woman who was virtually unknown before the book, and yet her cells — which were taken without her knowledge over 60 years ago — have been one of the most important tools in the field of medicine. Major themes of the book include economic injustice, ethics of modern medicine and extraordinary contributions from seemingly ordinary people.
A discussion of the film’s themes will follow the screening.
This is a special daytime event offering, for those whose schedules favor this time frame. It is part of the regular series of film screenings held at the Malden Senior Community Center.
Hope to see you there. Bring a friend!

A Taste of Malden
4/7/2014 5:30 PM - 8:30 PM
The Malden Chamber of Commerce is hosting an opportunity to sample the city’s varied cuisine scene.
A Taste of Malden will be held at the YMCA, 99 Dartmouth St., from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Monday, April 7. Tickets are $25, $5 for children 12 and under and can be purchased at the Malden Chamber of Commerce website, www.maldenchamber.org, or by calling 781-322-4500.
More than 25 area vendors will be represented at the fifth annual Taste of Malden on Monday, April 7. The event combines food, drink, live music, and several raffles.
Chamber Executive Director Jenna Coccimiglio said the annual event provides the city’s many eateries a space to show off their selections, while also providing new restaurants a chance to garner attention.
"We have some new restaurants that we are really excited about," said Coccimiglio. "This gives them an opportunity to showcase their specialties."
New vendors this year include Tornado Restaurant, a high end Asian-inspired tapas eatery, as well as Boston Yogurt, Cuban Cafe, The Roving Lunch Box and Stock Pot. Exchange Street Bistro, and All Seasons Table are among the many established vendors appearing again this year.
Coccimiglio said the event is all about showcasing what these local establishments have to offer. .
"Malden…has an amazing array and selection of restaurants, and it’s extremely important to highlight them and get our restaurants exposure to people who don’t normally drive or walk down those streets," said Coccimiglio.
A portion of admission ticket revenue will be donated to the local nonprofit Bread of Life, which supports a variety of anti-poverty programs in the Malden and surrounding communities.
There will also be a raffle to support Malden Chamber of Commerce Scholarships. These academic scholarships are granted to high school students nominated by the schools.

Panel Discussion
4/7/2014 7:00 PM - 9:30 PM
Do you wonder why some people don’t get proper access to healthcare or legal services? Is it lack of funds? Education? Prejudice? Time constraints? Distorted perspectives within the health and legal professions? Why, in a country rich in so many ways, does the system leave so many people behind?
Malden Reads has organized a panel of experts to help our community look at the inequalities in healthcare and legal services using the story of Henrietta Lacks as a lens through which to gain perspective. What has changed since the 1950s and what has not? What are some people and organizations doing to shore up these inequities?
The panel discussion is open to the public and will take place on Wednesday, April 9th at 7pm, at the Malden Public Library in the Maccario Room.
Our distinguished guests will be Howard Mandell, former Board Chairperson at Southern Poverty Law Center and Rabbi at Congregation Beth Israel of the Merrimack Valley; Julie Palmer, ScD, Co-Principal Investigator of the Black Women’s Health Study and Professor of Epidemiology, Slone Epidemiology Center at Boston University; and Danielle O'Banion, MD, Cambridge Health Alliance Family Medicine Resident.
The moderator for this panel discussion will be Suzanne Koven, MD, internist at Massachusetts General Hospital and writer for various publications including the Boston Globe’s “In Practice” column where she two years ago published an article entitled “Why Henrietta Lacks Matters”.
To browse articles, panelist bios, and other resources related to this discussion about health and legal services equity, visit the Malden Reads 2014 blog at http://maldenreads.tumblr.com where you can also submit a question before the panel discussion. Questions can also be tweeted @maldenreads with hashtag #mrquestion or emailed to maldenreads@gmail.com.
Hope to see you next Wednesday evening for a deeper exploration of a major theme from this year's book selection. You DON'T need to have read the book to participate and be enriched by the discussion.
Please help spread the word .. and bring a friend!

Film Screening of "Mask" for Teens at the Teen Center
Malden Reads is collaborating with the Malden Teen Enrichment Center (MTEC) to show the movie “Mask” on Wednesday, April 9 at 4 p.m. at MTEC, located across Ferry Street from Malden High School at 1 Salem St.

This movie fits with one of this year's Malden Reads companion books – Wonder by R.J. Palacio, which tells the story of a child with a rare deformity and his efforts to fit in at a public school.

Like the protagonist of Wonder, the main character of “Mask” was born with extreme facial deformities. “Mask” tells his story about character, empathy, compassion and acceptance. It also shows how courage, humor, and determination can overcome even the most extreme challenges.

For more information about the 1985 film "Mask," click here. For more information about the book "Wonder" (which we highly recommend for all ages), click here.

This event is open for all teens. A discussion will follow the screening.

Book Discussion Series Concludes
4/14/2014 5:30 PM - 7:00 PM
Councilor-at-Large Debbie DeMaria is "Celebrity Guest"
A lively book discussion—including special guest Councilor-at-Large Debbie DeMaria—will be held at the Malden Public Library on Monday, April 14 at 5:30 p.m. The discussion will be led by a library staff member.
We invite anyone who would like to participate in the discussion to attend, including those who may have never attended a book discussion before. This will be the last in the series of Book Discussions offered for this year's Malden Reads program.
The discussion at the Library will explore ideas and themes from the 2014 featured selection “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks” by Rebecca Skloot.
Justin Gottlieb, a member of the Malden Reads community, commented, “There is such tension in this book. The ethics around Henrietta’s story are troubling, but there has been so much gained. She’s a hero and a victim. She lives on, even though she died. The reader has to examine their own heart to know whether celebration or sorrow is most appropriate.”
All are welcome to share their thoughts and comments and to hear what others around the community have to say.
The discussion is free but space is limited, so attendees must sign up in advance. To sign up, call the Malden Public Library at 781-324-0218 or email bookgroups@maldenreads.org. Be sure to specify that you are signing up for the Monday, April 14 discussion.
For more information about Malden Reads, the featured selections and upcoming events, visit www.maldenreads.org, follow us on Twitter @MaldenReads, or friend us on Facebook. Pass the word on to your friends, co-workers, and family members and encourage them to join this mailing list by emailing us at maldenreads@gmail.com.
As always, we look forward to seeing you there!

Movie and Discussion
4/25/2014 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM
Malden Reads is collaborating with the Mystic Valley Salvation Army to show the movie “Something the Lord Made” on Friday, April 25 at 7 p.m. at the Salvation Army, located at 213-219 Main Street in Malden.
The last of the Malden Reads free film screenings, “Something the Lord Made” is the 2004 HBO original film is based on a true story and is a dramatization of the complex relationship between heart surgery pioneers Alfred Blalock (played by Alan Rickman) and Vivien Thomas (played by Mos Def). The film was nominated for nine Emmy awards, winning three.
Blalock is a successful cardiologist at Johns Hopkins. Thomas is a highly intelligent lab technician who has no college degree but great manual dexterity. Originally expected to contribute as a janitor, he quickly becomes indispensible to their groundbreaking work. The film is set in the 1940s and a major theme of the film is how the two colleagues are profoundly separated outside of the laboratory by the prevailing racism of their time.
All films in the series highlight themes from the community read’s 2014 featured selection The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot.

Mayor Gary Christenson will hold his monthly Public Safety Awareness meeting on Saturday, April 26th from 10:00 AM to 12:00 Noon on the Bike Path where it meets Broadway (behind the Hess Station). The Mayor will be joined by Police Chief Kevin Molis, Fire Chief Jack Colangeli, and Department of Public Works Director Bob Knox to discuss Bike Path safety and will answer questions and address concerns residents may have.
Pastor Rachel Manke of the First Lutheran Church and her congregation have generously offered to “adopt” this area of the Bike Path to help to keep clean. Immediately following the meeting, a Bike Path cleanup will be held. “We are excited residents are enjoying the Bike Path and we want to make sure they are aware of the best ways to stay safe while using it,” said Mayor Christenson. “We are very grateful to Pastor Manke for helping the City keep the Bike Path clean.”
Each month the Mayor holds a meeting in a different part of the City.

Movie and Discussion
4/27/2014 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM
We are pleased to present the film screening “An American Dreams in China” co-sponsored by Malden Reads and the Chinese Culture Connection on Sunday, April 27, at 2pm at the Malden YMCA.
A 2013 Chinese film directed by Peter Chan, the film stars Huang Xiaoming, Deng Chao and Tong Dawei. This film has been dubbed "the Chinese Social Network" and is an epic tale that follows three friends who launch a successful online English instruction school for Chinese students — and then face lawsuits over copyright infringement. The film is in Chinese with English subtitles.
Each year, we show a film in collaboration with the Chinese Culture Connection, in some way related to the program's themes, as a way of creating dialog and bridging cultures within the community.
We invite you to join in the screening of this film and the discussion to follow. Light refreshments will be served.

Panel Discussion about Ethics
4/28/2014 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM
The story on the other side of research
On Monday April 28th the public is invited to join a panel of experts in a discussion about ethics and research, a key theme of this year’s Malden Reads choice, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot. The discussion begins at 7 p.m., is free, and will take place in the Macarrio Room of the Malden Public Library.
Merriam-Webster’s defines ethics as, “rules of behavior based on ideas about what is morally good and bad” and adds that it is also the area of study or the branch of philosophy that deals with these matters. This definition acknowledges that rules are part of ethics. It also presumes that rules emerge in response to a sense of what is right. Is it possible then that something is unethical before the rule is constructed?
Knowing the story of Henrietta Lacks’ life, sickness, death, and family makes it easy to find fault with Dr. George Gey, the researcher who extracted cells from her body without her knowledge or permission. This was wrong we say, though his actions were within the norm of the day, not a violation or breech of policy. He himself did not even benefit monetarily by his actions. The HeLa cells he extracted have enabled medical breakthroughs in treatment of various forms of cancer, polio, hemophilia, etc. Their discovery and use have saved lives. So what was his ethical transgression?
Many agree he should have sought her consent. The family should have been told or perhaps been compensated monetarily in some way. The full answer to this ethical dilemma comes from Skloot through Elie Wiesel. His inspiring admonition, an ideal for how we should not only treat but see our fellow humans captures the essence of what ethics enables us to be for one another.
“We must not see any person as an abstraction. Instead, we must see in every person a universe with its own secrets, with its own treasures, with its own sources of anguish, and with some measure of triumph.” Elie Wiesel from The Nazi Doctors and the Nuremberg Code)
What enables and thwarts such regard in the world of research? What of the system makes a researcher’s process ethically challenging or easier? What are the spoken and unspoken considerations that give depth to questions of benefit, value, consequence, in various research discoveries or processes? How do researchers see beyond their often highly focused, everyday tasks to grasp beyond abstraction to real lives, stories, and triumphs? So much of our health comes admittedly by the hard work of researchers. And yet, the call to rigor in the ethical process must go on as we continue to arrive at places where rules do not exist.
Our distinguished panel will speak to these and other questions. They are Teresa Doksum, PhD., M.P.H. - Director of Research Ethics, Institutional Review Board Chair at ABT Associates Inc.; Noel Casey, PhD - Analytical Director, Center for Biometals & Metallomics (CBM) Boston University School of Medicine; Kerstin Lindblad-Toh, PhD, director of Science for Life Laboratory Uppsala at Uppsala University, & of Vertebrate Genome Biology at the Broad Institute, and Elissa Weitzman, MD, of Children’s Hospital in Boston and Harvard Medical School (moderator).
