Perle Fine exhibit - Abstract
4/14/2015 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM
An opening reception will be held for the Malden Public Library’s newest exhibition: Perle Fine: exhibit Abstract on Tuesday, April 14, at 7 p.m. The exhibition will include newly acquired works by nationally-renowned artist Perle Fine, as well as works by I. (Irene) Rice Pereira, Constantine Arvanites, and Constance Stella. The exhibit will be on display in the Lower Art Gallery of the Converse Memorial Building, located at 36 Salem Street. In conjunction with the exhibition, at 7 p.m., author Kathleen Housley will present a talk based on her biography of Perle Fine entitled Tranquil Power: The Art and Life of Perle Fine.

Perle Fine (1905-1988) was born in Boston, to parents who had recently emigrated from Russia. One of six children, she grew up in Malden where her family owned a dairy farm on Alden Street. Before she had finished high school, she began to study art, enrolling in the School of Practical Art in Boston. While still in her teens, Fine moved to New York City to study at the Art Students League with Kimon Nicolades. Fine was an artist at the forefront of the Abstract Expressionist movement. She studied with Hans Hofmann and was a friend and colleague of Jackson Pollock, Lee Krasner, Willem and Elaine de Kooning, and Franz Kline. Fine participated in the seminal 9th Street Show of 1951, and was included in all five New York Annuals of the 1950s. She was a faculty member in the Fine Arts Department at Hofstra University from 1962 to 1973. Fine’s work is represented in many important collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, National Gallery of Art, Solomon R.
Guggenheim Museum, and the Whitney Museum of American Art.

Kathleen L. Housley is the author of eight acclaimed books, numerous national journals, including the Christian Century and Image. Housley has published articles on women artists and collectors in Woman’s Art Journal. She is also the author of Emily Hall Tremaine: Collector on the Cusp and a series of poems, The Art of Science, the Science of Art, in which she delves into the mind of Leonardo da Vinci.

Exhibition hours are Mondays 7:00-8:30 p.m. and Wednesdays 2:00-4:00 p.m., or by appointment through May 18. For more information, call the Library at 781-324-0218.

Mayor Christenson, State Representative Steve Ultrino and Malden Redevelopment Authority Executive Director Deborah Burke invite the community for the official ribbon-cutting ceremony of the newly refurbished Callahan Park on Friday, April 17th at 3:45 PM. The ceremony will precede the first home game of the 2015 Malden High Softball season.
The ceremony is the culmination of part of the City’s FY-2013 to FY-2015 Capital Improvement Plan, which included a $780,000 investment for improvements. The park now sports a rehabilitated softball field including a sodded playing field and skinned infield. New field fencing, dugouts, player benches, and new perimeter fencing has been installed. Additionally, public parking spots have doubled the number of off-street parking spaces available to field users, patrons of local businesses and the neighborhood. Improved lighting and infrastructure for video surveillance cameras have been installed for enhanced public safety. Green Acres Landscape & Construction Co., Inc. was the contractor and the project was administered by the Malden Redevelopment Authority on the City’s behalf.
“I couldn’t be happier with the results of the Callahan Park renovation which have been a long time coming,” said Mayor Christenson. “I thank State Representative Ultrino, the City Council and the Malden Redevelopment Authority for their commitment to this renovation.”
