Chinese Culture Connection Gala
4/6/2019
Malden’s Chinese Culture Connection is hosting its 14th annual Fundraising Gala and Award Banquet on Saturday, April 6 at 6PM Organizers look forward to sharing live entertainment, live and silent auctions, and an authentic 10-course Chinese dinner. The CCC, a non-profit organization, was founded in 1985. Originally begun in Reading, the CCC relocated in 1999 to Malden. The organization’s mission, according to chinesecultureconnection.org, is “to promote intellectual harmony, strengthen diverse communities and build bridges between American and Chinese people.” The group supports the growing Asian immigrant population by building connections between Asians and diverse communities. It shares art and culture and also celebrates diversity. By offering a plethora of cultural programs for children and adults, the CCC wants the exposure of Chinese culture to enhance an appreciation of the culture and to expand awareness and understanding of the world. Each year at the Gala and Award Banquet, the CCC recognizes three special individuals and/or groups who have “committed and contributed their talents and time for the betterment of our society in the area of the arts, culture and humanities,” according to the website. The Life-Long Community Services Award will be presented to Eugene Welch, executive Director of South Cove Community Health Center, “for his unflagging commitment in establishing a new Chinese health center branch to support the Asian community in Malden.” The Excellence in Diversity and Inclusion Award will be presented to Professor Paul Watanabe of UMass Boston, “for his dedication and commitment in educating and promoting the knowledge of American politics and awareness of civic engagement, to the Asian community and beyond, so that community groups, of all origins, can be engaged in local government, politics and become spokespersons or leaders of their community.” The Outstanding Arts and Cultural Award will be presented to Ose Schwab, “for her tireless commitment to promoting the awareness of the richness and diversity of the arts and culture within the Malden community and beyond.” The Gala will begin April 6 at 6 p.m. at the Hei La Moon Chinese Restaurant 88 Beach Street in Boston’s Chinatown.

Author Talk with Hester Fox author of "The Witch of Willow Hall" at 7PM Join the Malden Public Library for a reading, Q&A, and signing by Hester Fox. Books will be available for purchase. "In the wake of a scandal, the Montrose family and their three daughters-Catherine, Lydia, and Emeline-flee Boston for their new country home, Willow Hall. The estate seems sleepy and idyllic. But a subtle menace creeps into the atmosphere, remnants of a dark history that call to Lydia, and to the youngest, Emeline. All three daughters will be irrevocably changed by what follows, but none more than Lydia, who must draw on a power she never knew she possessed if she wants to protect those she loves. For Willow Hall's secrets will rise, in the end." Hester Fox Bio: "When not writing and painting, Hester works in the museumfield as a collections maintenance technician. This job has taken her from historic houses to fine art museums, where she has the privilege of cleaning and caring for collections that range from paintings by old masters, toancient artifacts, to early American furniture. She has a master's degree in historical archaeology, as well as a background in Medieval studies and art history. Hester lives outside of Boston with her husband." (HesterFox.com)
