Like "The Hate U Give," this middle school novel tells the story of an incident of police brutality of an unarmed young black male. Kiely states in an interview, "As a black man and a white man writing this book together, we could each tell half the story from our own authentic cultural backgrounds and put those two narratives in conversation with each other." Knight is a Malden native and well-known cartoonist and musician whose work often deals with political, social and racial issues. Swidey is a Boston Globe writer and author of The Assist: Hoops, Hopes and the Game of their Lives, and co-author of Last Lion: The Fall and Rise of Ted Kennedy.
