A Conversation on Race & the Media
5/10/2018 7:00 PM - 7:15 PM
Beebe School 401 Pleasant St. Join us for a discussion on race and the media with special guests Keith Knight, Neil Swidey and Brendan Kiely. Kiely is the co-author of "All-American Boys" (one of this year's Malden Reads companion books), which received a Coretta Scott King Author Honor Award and other awards. Like "The Hate U Give," this middle school novel tells the story of an incident of police brutality of an unarmed young black male. Kiely states in an interview, "As a black man and a white man writing this book together, we could each tell half the story from our own authentic cultural backgrounds and put those two narratives in conversation with each other." Knight is a Malden native and well-known cartoonist and musician whose work often deals with political, social and racial issues. Swidey is a Boston Globe writer and author of The Assist: Hoops, Hopes and the Game of their Lives, and co-author of Last Lion: The Fall and Rise of Ted Kennedy. The conversation will be moderated by Dr. Kerri Greenidge, an historian, researcher, lecturer, and Co Director of the African American Freedom Trail Project.
