Run for Women
5/12/2019

A Mother’s Day tradition continues on May 12th with the 22nd running of the Melrose Run for Women. The Melrose Run for Women is a 3.5-mile women-only road race that takes participants through the peaceful and scenic Swain’s Pond section of Melrose. Online registration closes May 8th.
The day begins with a family friendly Kid’s Race at 8:30 AM on the Pine Banks Park track, across from the start of the women’s race. The 5 and under ages will be running a straight 50-100-meter dash and the kids ages 6 and up will run about a ¼ mile.
The 3.5-mile race can be run individually or in a mother-daughter team. Race starts at 9 AM and finishers are greeted by children giving out flowers at the finish line. After the race, participants can enjoy music, coffee, water, fresh baked-goods, fresh fruit and other tasty treats donated by local businesses. It is truly a celebration of women that is enjoyed by the whole family.
Please be advised that parking in the area is limited. Participants and spectators are encouraged to carpool, bike or walk to the starting tent at the Sylvan Street entrance to Pine Banks Park. Early arrival is also recommended.
The race is made possible through the generous support of major sponsors, including Eastern Bank, Residential Realty Group, 1-800-Got-Junk? and the Anne E. Borhesani Community Foundation. Dozens of other local businesses also support the race through donations and in-kind contributions.
The race is presented and organized by The Melrose Running Club, a non-profit organization started in 1996 to promote the sport of running while making positive contributions to the local community. Proceeds support the important work of the Melrose Alliance Against Violence (MAAV) and other local charities. Since starting the race in 1997, this single road raise has raised over $170,000 for local charities.

MaldenCORE's 4th Wednesday Conversations
5/22/2019 6:45 PM - 9:00 PM

As a program associate in Vera’s Center on Sentencing and Corrections, Mikelina Belaineh's work focuses on reducing jail incarceration, addressing racial, ethnic and other disparities in the criminal justice system, and engaging impacted communities in system reform efforts. Their work consists of research, writing, and providing technical assistance to local jurisdictions and communities. Prior to joining Vera, Mikelina served as the Chief Program Officer for the nonprofit social enterprise InnerCity Weightlifting, a street violence reduction program serving street and gang-involved young adults by connecting them with new resources, networks, and opportunities. They now support the organization's work in an advisory role.
Mikelina became interested in social justice issues in college, where they spent their four years organizing around LGBTQ issues in rural parts of Texas. In law school, they narrowed their focus to issues around criminal justice, recognizing it as a system that has implications for all areas of social justice, and therefore an opportunity to facilitate great impact. Mikelina holds a JD from Harvard Law School, where they served as co-president of Lambda and co-founded the Queer and Trans People of Color student organization, and a BA with honors from Texas A&M University. Mikelina was born and raised in Arlington, TX, where their family established a diaspora after immigrating from Ethiopia and Eritrea.
