Mayor’s Annual Senior Cookout

Mayor Gary Christenson will be holding his annual Senior Cookout on Wednesday, September 3rd from 4:00-6:00 PM at Anthony’s, 105 Canal Street. The event will be held for the benefit of Malden seniors and tickets will be required for entry into the event.
Tickets will be delivered to seniors residing in elderly housing. Malden seniors who do not live in elderly housing may obtain tickets on August 18, 19, 20 and 21 from 9:00-11:00 AM at the Mayor’s office, 200 Pleasant Street, 6th Floor. Tickets will be available for distribution at the Senior Center on Wednesday, August 27th from 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM as well. Proof of residency/photo identification will be required.
Tickets will not be available at the door. For more information please call 781-397-7000 ext. 2004.

Dedication of Edward J. “Eddie” Larson Memorial Field at Devir Park
On Sunday Sept 7, at 11:00 AM
The City of Malden will hold a dedication ceremony of the Edward J. “Eddie” Larson Memorial Field at Devir Park on Malden Street. Eddie, a lifelong resident of Malden passed away unexpectedly in April at the age of 55. Eddie, a devoted husband and father was passionate about the sport of baseball spending many days as a youth playing at Devir Park. As an adult he both played and coached his favorite sport. The dedication of the field in his name will be a fitting tribute to him.
Friends and relatives of Eddie Larson as well as the public are welcome to attend the event which will take place rain or shine.

Second Annual Latino Festival

Malden will host its’ Second Annual Latino Festival on Saturday, September 13th at 5:00 PM at City Hall Plaza, the Centro host reached out to Mayor Christenson to learn more about the upcoming festival and about his connection to Malden’s Latino community.

As Malden is the second most diverse community in the state, it has been a priority of Mayor Christenson to openly embrace Malden’s many cultures. He was especially pleased last year when Gloria Salazar of the Malden Latino Council approached the City’s Community Outreach Manager Karen Colon Hayes about the idea for a Latino Festival. The Mayor recounted the great success of last year’s festival which was attended by more than 500 people who were entertained by many talented dancers and singers. Authentic Latino food vendors were on hand to serve traditional South and Central American fare. “The performances could have gone on all night,” said Mayor Christenson. “Everyone in attendance had a fantastic time!”

Malden’s Second Annual Latino Festival, which kicks off National Hispanic Heritage Month will take place on Saturday, September 13th at 5:00 PM at City Hall Plaza, 200 Pleasant Street. The event is being organized by the Malden Latino Council. All are encouraged to attend the free festival showcasing vibrant authentic Latino music, dancing performances, cultural art and delicious food from local food vendors.

Recycling Day

The Department of Public Works (DPW) will hold a recycling day for a variety of items including tires, televisions, computer monitors and car batteries on Saturday, September 20, 2014. Residents of Malden will be able to bring recyclable items to the DPW, located at 356 Commercial Street from 9:00 AM-2:00 PM. Paint will be recycled from 9:00 AM-1:00 PM. Latex, oil and acrylic paints as well as stains and varnishes will also be accepted. However, antifreeze, household hazardous materials, cleaning chemicals or other hazardous materials will not be accepted.
Residents are also encouraged to bring their fluorescent bulbs to the DPW to be inserted into the “Bulb Eater” which crushes them for recycling. The old process of dropping off bulbs, boxing and storing them for pickup has been deemed an ineffective and costly method. Each barrel holds 1,500 crushed bulbs!
New this year, the DPW is offering free of charge the recycling of Styrofoam products. Refoamit, LLC will be on hand to accept Styrofoam products including #4, #5 and #6 foam, foam egg cartons, hot cups, coolers, packing blocks, foam plates, take out containers, produce and meat trays with the recycle symbol in the triangle. All food product containers must be rinsed before recycling.

Car tires: $2
Truck tires: $20
TVs and computer monitors: $5
Car batteries: $1
Motor oil (per gallon): $1 (no antifreeze or transmission fluid)
Used oil filters: $2.50
PAINT FEE SCHEDULE:
1-5 gallons: $10
6-10 gallons: $15
11-15 gallons: $20
16-20 gallons: $25 ($3 per gallon after 20 gallons)

Mayor’s Safety Awareness Meeting

Mayor Gary Christenson will hold his monthly Public Safety Awareness meeting on Monday, September 22nd from 6:00-8:00 PM at the First Church of the Nazarene, 529 Eastern Avenue to address the latest crime statistics and trends citywide.

The Mayor will be joined by Police Chief Kevin Molis, Fire Chief Jack Colangeli, and DPW Director Bob Knox who will be on hand to answer questions and address concerns. “These meetings give residents a chance to voice their safety concerns and hear the best ways to stay safe,” said Mayor Christenson
Each month the Mayor holds a meeting in a different part of the City.

Senior Safety Panel to be held at the Senior Center
On Tuesday, Sept 23rd at 12:45 PM, a Senior Safety panel will be held at the Senior Center, 7 Washington Street for the benefit of area seniors. Representatives from the Malden Police Department, Fire Department, Intercity Home Care and Mystic Valley Eder Services will make up the panel. The purpose of the event is to bring seniors up to date on the latest in crime trends and scams while reminding them of safety measures and precautions they can take in their homes and outside to remain safe while enjoying an active lifestyle.

Window Arts Kickoff

Please join Malden Arts to celebrate the artists whose work appears in the various windows around downtown for the 9th Annual Window Arts Malden.
Festivities will begin at City Hall at 4:30 and continue to 7pm.
4:30 - Opening remarks by Mayor Christensen and the start of the WAM Scavenger Hunt
4:30-5:30 - Scavenger Hunt (participants have one hour to complete the scavenger hunt clues and return to City Hall for the drawing).
5:00-7:00 - Artists will be at their windows to discuss their art. Musicians (Maya Colon-Hayes, Tom Murphy, and Rocko Star Magic) will be on hand on Pleasant Street to entertain the strollers.

Fall Fest 2014

Malden will be holding its annual Fall Fest on Saturday, September 27, from 12 to 4pm at Fellsmere Pond (at Savin St. and Fellsmere Rd.) Everyone is welcome. The event will feature live music by the The Keep It Real Band, dancing by the YWCA dance troupe SWAG, and other local performers. The Salvation Army will be holding a chili cook-off for locals who want to compete for “Best Chili.” The event will also have food, an ice cream truck and games for children.
All local businesses are welcome to attend and promote their Malden business. People of all ages are welcome to fish, picnic and simply enjoy the natural beauty of newly renovated Fellsmere Pond and Park.
