CLARK TOURS HEAD START
9/11/2018 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM

CLARK TOURS HEAD START, CALLS FOR QUALITY AFFORDABLE CHILDCARE
Congresswoman Katherine Clark will visit with Malden Head Start staff and students to draw attention to the importance of quality, affordable childcare and her legislation entitled the 21st Century Child Care Investment Act.
Nationally, the average cost of day care is $9,589 per year. This tops the national average cost of in-state college tuition as well as the average cost of rent. Massachusetts families face an even steeper uphill climb. In the Commonwealth, the average annual cost of infant care is a slightly more than $17,000 while childcare for a four-year-old costs almost $13,000 per year. To address this economic and educational crisis, the Congresswoman introduced the 21st Century Child Care Investment Act to help families afford high quality childcare through refundable tax credit programs. The tax credit would be allocated directly to providers on a monthly basis, helping families who struggle to pay their bills every month. It would be available on a sliding scale for families earning up to 400% of the poverty line and could be worth as much as $14,000 a year annually. Additionally, the bill would ensure families are receiving quality care through new educational standards. These high-quality standards would be phased in over five years, allowing providers adequate time to adjust their programs to meet the new criteria. Finally, the bill would help workers by making sure employee pay is factored into the conversation around high quality care.

PechaKucha Speaker Series
9/21/2018 7:00 PM - 7:15 PM

Malden has joined more than 1,000 cities participating in the PechaKucha movement and will host the first PechaKucha Malden Night.
PechaKucha is a creative networking approach that strives to stimulate gatherings with short and visual presentations about creative projects, stories or ideas.  Originated in Japan, the PechaKucha methodology offers a way for people to share their work or ideas without talking as much. With 20 slides of 20 seconds each, speakers have 6.5 minutes to give a taste of a topic.
The first PechaKucha Malden meeting will be presented by Jason Rubin, author; Grace Julian Murthy, designer and artist; Alanna Nelson, artist and project leader; Cynthia Becker, art historian and scholar of North African art; Lidija Vukovic, artist and special education teacher; and Jenny Chen, debate student and “fashion maven.”
All talks will be recorded and shared as part of the PechaKucha network.
For information and to see the speaker lineup, visit http://thegalleryinc.com/pechakucha or email info@thegalleryinc.com

National Voter Registration Day
9/25/2018

On Tuesday, September 25th National Voter Registration Day activities will take place in various locations around the City of Malden. The annual effort is held on the fourth Tuesday in September each year and its goal is to ensure everyone has the opportunity to vote. The campaign strives to create broad awareness of voter registration opportunities and to encourage citizens to register to vote so that they may begin participating in the political process. Also residents who have recently turned 18, have changed their name, or moved in the last year may use the opportunity to conveniently update their registration as updating voter registration is the best way to ensure a trouble-free experience at the polls. The local effort is being coordinated by the Arab American Institute in conjunction with their “Yalla Vote” campaign.

Malden Voter Registration locations will be as follows:
Atria Maplewood Place, 295 Broadway: Tuesday, 9/25 - from 2-3:30 PM
