School Committee approves $51.3m budget - As the city braces for possibly its toughest budget season in recent years, Superintendent of Schools Sidney Smith presented a $51.3 million schools budget for fiscal 2009 Monday night. The $51.3 million budget would represent an increase of $2.7 million, or 5.5 percent, over last year’s budget. The final budget is a re-working of the level-service budget Smith presented last month. The proposed budget included some cuts from last month, and was altered in order to "respond to additional needs," said Smith. The fiscal 2009 budget is helped by a surplus from the 2008 budget numbering more than $362,000, which Smith said would come in "very handy." Based on expenditure projections, he said he anticipates the School Department will be "in good shape for the remainder of the year."

Blasting continues for Quarrystone Condos - If you live near the Quarrystone at Overlook Ridge construction site, the condominium development straddling Malden and Revere, don’t be surprised if an engineer is knocking on your door before 9 a.m. It’s a new requirement for the engineering and construction company before they blast rock to warn residents within 100 feet of the blasting site. With blasting coming closer than ever to the Vining Street neighborhood for the Rowe’s Quarry redevelopment, Malden city officials called for a reevaluation of blasting procedures to protect local residents and their houses. New blasting procedures for the project were distributed to residents at a community meeting on April 3.
Mayor still weighing options for McFadden - The fate of McFadden Manor, the city-run nursing home on Forest Street, continues to hang in limbo while Mayor Richard Howard weighs options for the facility. In a phone interview this week, Howard said he has given two private companies, Hallmark Health — a nonprofit healthcare company serving Boston’s northern suburbs — and Cambridge Health Alliance, information about the nursing home in hopes that either company would be interested in taking over the management of the facility. While Cambridge Health Alliance has passed on the opportunity, at the time of press, the mayor was still waiting for a response from Hallmark Health.
Salemwood to hire two new principals - Both candidates for Salemwood principal are so strong Superintendent of Schools Sidney Smith said he might hire both. Smith proposed sweeping changes at the school, including a plan to have Salemwood revert back to its original format of including both a middle and elementary school, complete with two principals and two assistant principals. "We have two outstanding candidates (for principal)," Smith said, saying both candidates — Carol Keenan and Jonathan Ponds — would be "incredible assets" to the school and community. Smith and several members of the School Committee said the move would address the large student population at the school. The proposal was unanimously accepted. Ward 4 Committee Member Leonard Iovino said the move was "long overdue," in addressing the large size of the school. Smith said the measure may also end up saving the city money. Some committee members expressed concern regarding the candidates’ receptiveness to the altered school structure. Keenan currently serves the Malden Public Schools as the Holland House principal at Malden High School, while Ponds is the dean of the lower school for the Neighborhood House Charter School in Dorchester.
High School renovations approved - After months of deliberation, the Municipal Building Committee voted 3-1 this week to renovate Malden High School, but not to perform any additions at the site or to lease the underused Jenkins building to any outside groups. The move marked a return to the committee’s first proposals for improving Malden High School. Other plans had included proposals to move City Hall adjacent to the high school, while other plans proposed adding on to the high school or acquiring nearby land to build more classrooms. The recommendation, voted on Tuesday night, will be forwarded to the School Committee. They will hold a special meeting this Monday on the issue. The School Committee could still endorse another plan. Mayor Richard Howard referred to the entire process of voting on the high school renovations as "chaos."
Leif Manheim Sings A 44-year-old Malden resident who has Williams Syndrome, has completed a CD of 13 songs. To celebrate this achievement, he will perform a concert at the First Baptist Church of Woburn, located at 3 Winn St. in Woburn, on May 9, from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Manheim debuts Christian rock CD - Diagnosed as an adult, Leif exhibits many of the physiological and cognitive characteristics of a rare genetic developmental condition known as Williams Syndrome, which causes medical and developmental problems. Typical of individuals with Williams Syndrome, Leif loves music. He also happens to have perfect pitch, composes, improvises, and plays four instruments. Despite cognitive delays, Leif learned violin through the Suzuki method as a child. Later in high school he taught himself drums, keyboard, and guitar. Always composing and improvising, one day the idea to record the originals took root. And now, with the help of Sal Difusco of Sadetar Records, Leif can boast of completing one CD of 13 original Christian rock tunes.

RUGBY REVOLUTION: Mystic River sails into Sweet 16 Tournament It’s been said that Football is gentlemen’s game played by ruffians. Rugby is a ruffian’s game played by gentlemen. Judging by the grunts and groans and endless scrums going on at Pine Banks Park last weekend, the old adage certainly holds true. Welcome to the world of professional rugby, a sport that combines the speed and agility of soccer with the bone-crunching hits of football. In this game, two teams engage weekly turf war for total field total supremacy. Wearing minimal padding, these athletes aren’t afraid to throw their weight around and handle the rough stuff. Players regularly launch themselves into an opposing line like a bull taking aim at a matador. It’s hard-hitting and unrelenting — And a game where Mystic River rules. The Malden-based rugby team recently captured its first Northeast Championship since 1992.  And after defeating the Schuylkill River Exiles, 38-12, at Pine Banks Park, April 13, Mystic River has already secured a spot in the National Sweet 16 Tournament in Austin, Texas, May 17-18.

** NEW ** artSPACE@16 Presents Exhibit No. 43 - Bedecked by Kim Salerno - Potluck reception with Kim Salerno: Sat, May 3, from 2:00pm - 5:00pm
Artist talk at 3:00pm. Free Admission. All are welcome.Exhibition Dates: May 3 - 31, 2008 - artSPACE@16 proudly presents its 43rd exhibit - ‘BEDECKED’ by KIM SALERNO, a selection of Salerno's latest large scale, colorful patterned college work, cut paper sculpture, and smaller vividly colored dioramas. the public is cordially invited to a potluck reception that has been scheduled for Saturday May 3, from 2 - 5pm. Salerno will give a talk about her work at 3pm the same day. Currently a resident of Newport, R.I., Kim Salerno earned a Master of Architecture from the University of Pennsylvania. She holds a Certificate in Painting from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a B.A. from Smith College. She has taught art and design at colleges and universities throughout the country including the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. On her work, Salerno states, "The work on display at artSPACE@16 is an exploration of decoration and fine art. Shunned from formal inquiry in both contemporary fine art and design practice, decoration is a forgotten carrier of meaning. It is a window into ideas and an avenue of feminist thought. Similarly, women’s contributions to visual culture, particularly decorative work, has been persistently marginalized." Salerno has worked as an architect and presently serves on the Historic District Commission in Newport, Rhode Island. Besides teaching at the University of Rhode Island, Salerno’s work has been exhibited throughout the United States in galleries, cultural centers and museums. The wall hangings in this exhibit combine patterned, domestic interior and garden imagery. Scenes include garden and architectural elements, decorative objects, and silhouetted figures.
Various images coexist in a flattened, patterned, fragmented, highly decorative scene. Materials include plastic, fake fur, foam beads, crystals, holographic paper, tulle, fringe, fabric and tassels as cloth; fiber and thread adorn more conventional art materials. Salerno’s work has won many awards including a recent grant from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation and a fellowship from the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts. The three-dimensional works build on similar themes, blurring distinctions between art and interior design, the work generally draws from a variety of sources such as Indian miniature painting, William Morris Arts and Crafts, Ikea catalogues and popular decorator magazines. ‘BEDECKED’ exhibit by Kim Salerno will be on display at artSPACE@16 located at 16 Princeton Road in Malden from May 3 - 31, 2008. Exhibit is open for viewing on these pre-scheduled Saturdays: May 3, 10, 17 and 31, from 12noon - 5:00pm and by appointment please call 781-321-8058 or email SandT.artSPACEat16@verizon.net. Gallery closed for Memorial Day weekend.
