Newly appointed City Council President Debbie DeMaria detailed the committee appointments for the coming year at the body’s Jan. 9 meeting. Each of the council’s three major committees carry forward at least one person in their leadership positions from last year.
Long-time License Committee Chair Councilor Neal Anderson will resume his post this year, as will last year’s Vice-Chair, Councilor Jadeane Sica. The Finance Committee will once again be head up Councilor Paul Condon, with new-comer Councilor David Camell serving as Vice Chair. Councilor Ryan O’Malley will take over the Ordinance Committee from Councilor Spadafora this year, while Councilor John Matheson will resume his role as Vice Chair.
“I have great people in place on these committees,” said DeMaria after the meeting.
While those committees have continuity from last year, some others may change significantly. When making her committee appointments, DeMaria came to the conclusion that four other standing committees -- the committees on Cemeteries, Problem Properties, Public Safety and Public Works --could be reduced in size from five members to three, as they do not meet as often.
“The work that is done in those committees can be done by a membership of three,” she said, citing potential scheduling difficulties as a reason for the change. As the act requires a change to the council’s rules, the matter was referred to the Ordinance Committee for further debate.
