Essay Writing Contest

Posted on Thursday, April 5, 2018 at 11:45 AM by Malden Homepage

High Expectations, a College Planning and English Language school in Malden, invites the diverse student community to enter its second Essay Writing Contest.
High Expectations has branches in Malden and Shanghai. The contest is open to students in both America and China and provides an opportunity for a multicultural educational exchange.
The contest is sponsored by High Expectations, MATV, and the Malden Observer/Wicked Local Malden. The goal of the writing contest is to encourage students to develop their writing ability, a skill critical to future academic and professional success. Students can choose from two topics, and essays will be judged by three prominent local writers. Winners are recognized with cash prizes, publication of winning essays in local news media, and certificates of achievement.
There will be two topics for students to pick from this year.

Topic A is: Music plays an important role in every culture and in every individual’s life. Write an essay explaining the role music plays in your culture or in your own life.

Topic B: Some people believe it’s better to grow up in a small town. Other people think it’s better to grow up in a big city. What is your position on this issue, and what reasons support your position?

Each essay should be between 500 and 600 words. The essay contest was created by Hong Zhang, the Director of High Expectations in China. Hong holds master’s degrees in English, writing, and publishing and has a passion for teaching these skills to high school students. “To me, writing is always the most honest medium to remember what I have seen, thought, and done in my life,” Hong said. “So it saves me clues to recall the past. I want to share this way of remembrance with my younger friends, on this is special occasion when they get to think about the world and share their thoughts on a cross-cultural platform. This will be a notable part of how they remember this particular summer of their youth life.”
Interested contestants may also participate in a free online English Language Arts Writing Workshop with students from China in May 2018. The workshop will provide local entrants with a platform to study and communicate with student participants from China. The course also provides skills to help students polish their essays before final submission.
For further information and contest regulations, read the presentation online at www.highexpectationsusa.com. Registration deadline is April 30, and the deadline for submission is May 28.
