Homestarters is a nonprofit organization founded by four Malden High School students
The project was developed as part of a personal and community development class at High Expectations, a college preparatory learning center. The students created this unique organization after discovering that a local moving company destroyed furniture seized during an eviction process and then abandoned by its owners.
The students saw this as an opportunity to turn gently used household items deserted by one family into a gift for another. Together they developed the structure for a nonprofit organization where families in need of furnishings can apply to get access to many household items including couches, tables, bureaus and appliances. All inquiries the organization handles remain confidential.
