Posted on Wednesday, January 30, 2019 at 12:00 AM by Mayor's Office

Zonta International (ZI), a leading global organization of professionals empowering women worldwide through service and advocacy, recently awarded Amelia Earhart Fellowships to 30 outstanding women who are pursuing doctoral degrees in aerospace-applied sciences and engineering. These women are honored as part of the legacy of Amelia Earhart, a famous air pioneer in the 1920s and 1930s and a member of Zonta. Earhart inspired generations of women to expand their horizons and follow their dreams. The Fellowships are funded through the Zonta International Foundation.
On January 17th, the Zonta Club of Malden, along with other local area clubs, held their annual Amelia Earhart Dinner. District 1 Governor Liz Hart and Malden Zontian Mary Jo Koizumi presented wings and certificates of achievement to six 2018 Amelia Earhart Fellows. They were assisted in planning the event with fellow Committee members: Janice Fallon, Darlene Joyce, Victoria Palmer-Erbs and Patricia Ann Finnigan-Zaccardo.
The Fellows in attendance included Nisha Chandramoorthy who is studying Mechanical Engineering/Computer Science at MIT; Carla Grobler, a PhD student in Laboratory for Aviation and the Environment at MIT; Srishti Kashyap, whose graduate work focuses on Microbiology and Planetary Sciences at the University of Massachusetts Amherst; Akshata Krishnamurthy who is working in the Aeronautics and Astronautics program at MIT; Clara Maurel who is focused on Planetary Sciences at MIT; and, Jacqueline Leah Thomas, a PhD student in the Aerospace Engineering program at MIT. Each of the them was recognized for following in Amelia Earhart’s footsteps and for empowering other women with their talent and commitment to the aerospace industry. Mayor Gary Christenson spoke at the event and was on hand to congratulate each of them and issue citations in honor of their accomplishments. He also thanked the Zonta Club of Malden and the Z-Club for their continued service and work in the community.
