Our board members, and capital campaign chair, shares this email about Bread of Life and our plans to build a new facility!
Chris Chitouras says "I Have A Personal Request"
Three years ago I started volunteering at some of the evening meals that Bread of Life (BOL) in Malden, MA provides to low income, homeless and isolated people. Having witnessed the dedication of this organization, I was inspired to join the Board of Directors. Fast forward, and I am now the Chair of the Capital Campaign,“Under One Roof.” We are responsible for raising the funds for our desperately-needed new facility, This facility will create efficiencies that will enable the agency to serve more food to more people and it will enable BOL to implement a number of supportive programs: cooking/nutrition classes to encourage healthier eating; job training; and yoga and exercise classes to improve health.
Additionally, the capital campaign will be a game-changer that will allow the construction of a new, all-inclusive home for Bread of Life at 54 Eastern Avenue in Malden. The top two floors will have 14 studio apartments for homeless seniors and vets (Section 8 housing, financed, owned and operated separately from BOL). The residents will be able to avail themselves of all the services offered housed in the same building.
BOL has secured $1.7 million in commitments and in-hand donations for its portion of the building project plus debt capacity for a $650,000 loan. Additional contributions include: a gift of $100,000 from Sidney and Deanna Wolk; Encore Boston Harbor donated $111,000 from the proceeds of their July preview opening; and $58,000 came from recent fundraisers.
Last year, with the help of 500 volunteers from 45 partner groups and the community at large, Bread of Life provided over 1,000,000 meals throughout nine local communities. Our main services include:
• Evening Meals Program serving 4 nights a week
• Groceries delivered to senior citizens in public housing
• Deliver meals, clothing and toiletries to homeless families sheltered in local motels
• Food Pantry Program in Malden and Everett
• 1,000 meals at Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter dinners
• Delivery of food & snacks to at-risk teens at the Malden Teen Center.
• Distribute donated men’s, women’s and children’s clothing
Amazingly, all of this was accomplished with only 4 full-time paid employees, an annual budget of $400,000 and many volunteers and generous supporters so the momentum towards reaching our goal ($1.25 million) is fantastic right now!
I am asking you to consider making as generous a donation as possible to our Capital Campaign (http://www.breadoflifemalden.org/under-one-roof.). If you feel comfortable, please forward this important, personal request to your family, friends, co-workers, Facebook and email groups. Another easy way to help the cause is by shopping at Amazon, use this link: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/chpf/homepage…, choose “Bread of Life Malden” and then start shopping so BOL automatically receives a donation of 0.5% of your total purchase.
Thanks so much for whatever you can do and please share!!
