Due to the results of recent soil testing performed in conjunction with the planned improvements to Roosevelt Park, a portion of the park is being closed to the public. 529 Salem Street (behind the Salemwood School). Recent testing revealed elevated levels of lead in the soil within 12” of the ground surface. The condition is limited to a localized area of the park. The affected area is generally the infield area of the softball field nearest to the Salemwood School Field House and the outdoor classroom located in the southeast corner of the park. This condition presents a potential hazard to public health and safety and requires the City to restrict public access to the affected areas. Fencing will be installed as soon as practicable to cordon off and restrict public access to these areas. This area of the park and the outdoor classroom will remain closed to the public until the planned park improvements are completed.
This condition has been reported to the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection as required by the applicable provisions of the Massachusetts Contingency Plan (310 CMR 40).
