UPCOMING CITYWIDE EVENTS:

  • * The Oak Grove Improvement Association (OGIA) is hosting an afternoon of BINGO games on Saturday, March 20th for children, families, and senior citizens from 1-3 pm at the Robinson Cuticura Building, Community Room, 59 Green Street.   • * The ZONTA Club of Malden's "Women Making a Difference" dinner will be held on Thursday, March 25th at Anthony's, 105 Canal Street beginning at 5:30 pm. For more information, please contact Karen Wheelock at kawheelock@comcast.net.
  • * The Malden High School Girls' Basketball Alumni Game will take place on Saturday, March 27th beginning at 2 pm in the Finn Gym. Tickets are $5.
  • * The Malden School Committee will be meeting on Monday, March 29th beginning at 6 pm in City Hall, Council Chamber, 3rd Floor. The meeting can also be viewed live on local cable.
  • * Mayor Howard's Annual "Daffodil Dance" will be held at the Irish-American, 177 West Street on Thursday, April 1st from 5-8 pm.
  • * An Avon Breast Cancer Walk fundraiser will be held at the Dockside Restaurant, 229 Centre Street on Thursday, April 1st from 7-10 pm. 10 percent of all proceeds will go toward the organization.
  • * The Hallmark Visiting Nurse Association will hold a Health Fair on Friday, April 9th from 10-1 pm in the Senior Center, 7 Washington Street.
  • * St. Joseph's Parish, 790 Salem Street will be hosting their annual flea market and craft fair on Saturday, April 10th from 9-3 pm.
  • * Malden's Local Cultural Council will be meeting on Saturday, April 10th beginning at 9:30 am at the Malden Public Library.
  • * St. Rocco's Society will be hosting their annual banquet to help raise funds for this year's feast in August. The event will be held on Saturday, April 10th beginning at 6 pm at Anthony's, 105 Canal Street. Tickets are $45 and for more information, please contact stroccomalden@verizon.net or by calling 781-438-0803.

CITY COUNCIL NEWS:

The River's Edge Commission will meet next on Wednesday, April 7th at 9 am in City Hall, 6th Floor, Mayor Howard's Conference Room...Don't forget that census forms that will be used for Census 2010 will be mailed out in March and are due back by April 1. If you have any questions, please contact the City Clerk's Office at 781-397-7116 or cityclerk@cityofmalden.org...The Malden Police Department has set up a tip line and citizens can now send a text message to Tip411 (847411) or an e-mail by clicking on the "submit a tip" icon on maldenpd.com. If using texting, the word "Malden" must be added before the tip. Tip411 as a way for the community to send anonymous tips through text messages and e-mail...Speaking of the Malden Police Department, congratulations to new Police Chief James Holland! 

Kudos to the Malden School Committee for working to update the district's anti-bullying policy...The 7 Mile Road Church is planning a week long of "soccer nights," set for July 12-16 at MacDonald Stadium in Malden from 6-8 pm. They are hoping to make it a community event while serving the needy in our area. If you are interested in helping out in any capacity, please let Marie know at irdcks@hotmail.com. There will be an informational meeting at the Emerson School on Highland Avenue on Sunday March 21st at noon and lunch will be served...The city's winter parking ban ends on April 1st.

WARD 1 NEWS:
Ferryway School upcoming events: School Council meeting, Thursday, March 18th at 7 pm in the school library; PTO Candy Bar BINGO on Friday, March 19th at 6 pm in the school cafeteria; and PTO meeting, Tuesday, April 13th from 6:30-8 pm in the school libary...Good luck to the Ferryway School students as MCAS testing begins Monday, March 22nd...The Ferryway School park will include fencing and be ready early spring 2010...126 Cross Street (corner of Walnut and Cross Street) will begin being demolished. Any questions please call Scot Kenworthy at 781-929-4912...Deepest sympathy on the passing of longtime Ward 1 resident Anthony Ventura.

Congratulations to Louie Barretto, Jr. of L&L Services for helping the citizens of Washington D.C. recover from one of the snowiest winters ever in the Nation’s capital...The Bell Rock Safety Plan at Medford, Bell Rock, and Green Street remains in effect. We recently had a follow up meeting and a final meeting will be held soon to determine how to move forward...The WWII Memorial renovation at Bell Rock Memorial Park continues and a June dedication is being planned.

Please e-mail me any potholes that need to be filled in as soon as possible with a description such as the street address and location, i.e. manhole cover, near curb...The Mayor's Housing Task Force inspects problem residential and commercial properties throughout the community in an effort to eliminate blight in the neighborhoods. Ward 1 locations that are on the Mayor's Housing Task Force list as of February 16th include 168 Belmont Street, 141 Cross Street, 163 Ferry Street, 161-163 Madison Street, 91-95 Medford Street, 33 Pratt Street, 49 Walnut Street, and 141 Walnut Street...Please continue to report any street light outages, graffiti issues, and/or abandoned shopping carts to me as soon as possible.
