Mayor Gary Christenson recently participated in a ribbon cutting ceremony for the second location of Little Love Bug Daycare and Learning Center at 595 Broadway. This location and the one at 529 Eastern Avenue is owned and operated by Rosemarie Raduazzo and her business partner Erin Traver. The name of the business honors Raduazzo’s late mother who called her children and grandchildren her “little love bugs." Rosemarie previously worked in the industry for 35 years at corporate based centers. Erin Traver is a first-time mom who made a career change after observing the need for both convenient and quality day care.

Raduazzo is particularly proud to offer parents long hours, year-round operation, and flexibility with work schedules. The preschool opens at 6:30 AM, with drop-off starting at 7 AM, and closes at 6 PM, which allows many families the opportunity to go to work without worrying about arriving to work late or having to leave early because of strict drop-off and pick-up times. They also work to accommodate families with special needs.

For more information, including hours of operation, please call 781-480-4678.

The Church, located on Hillside Avenue had its earliest beginnings as St. Luke’s on Eastern Avenue and together with the Union Baptist Churches represent 115 years of church history in the city of Malden from 1891 to 2006.
The Eastern Avenue Baptist Church began officially with the original name of St. Luke’s in October 1891. The name was changed to Eastern Avenue Baptist Church in January 1910. In 1909 the real estate located at the comer of Eastern Avenue and Hillside Avenue was purchased from the American Unitarian Association.
The Union Baptist Church held its first service on January 22, 1899 at Bailey's Hall on Pleasant Street in Malden and was incorporated August 12, 1901. The Pentecostal Chapel (Judson Square) was purchased in 1903 and later the lot at the comer of Madison and Meridian streets was purchased for the permanent church site. Between 1901 and 1945, many efforts were made to unite the churches. On November 7, 1945, the joint bodies of Union and Eastern Avenue Baptist churches merged and named the new church Emmanuel Baptist Church. The dedication service was held on Sunday, March 31, 1946.
The first pastor of the Emmanuel Baptist Church was Rev. Earl W. Lawson. He was installed on Sunday, October 26, 1942 and he served as pastor until February 1978. The Reverend Louis E. Sibley, III was installed as pastor on Sunday, September 9, 1979 and served until June 1986. Rev. Wayne A. Gadie, the current pastor, was installed as pastor on Sunday, August 7, 1988. Mayor Christenson presented a citation to Pastor Wayne Gadie in honor of the milestone anniversary.

I read something recently about the irony of the phrase "just vanilla." Poor old vanilla has become "plain" in light of so many new, exotic flavor combinations. Yet vanilla is a flavor that comes from the seeds of a tropical orchid whose flowers last only one day, and is the second most expensive spice in the world! This got me thinking about all the things I eat that I take for granted. We have so much available to us in our local supermarkets, farmer's markets and specialty shops - if we have the money.
For decades, the federal government has provided SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) and WIC (Women, Infants and children) to make funds available directly to lower-income households to purchase groceries. But SNAP benefits decreased across the board in July due to the end of COVID-SNAP benefits. At the same time, food costs are 24% higher in Eastern Massachusetts (including the Boston metropolitan area) than in the rest of the nation. This makes it one of the most expensive places in the country to eat. The average food costs in the Boston area are estimated, depending on the exact community, at between $380 to $640 per person per month. Add to that the high cost of housing in the Boston area, and the result is lower-income households experiencing continual financial strain.
This is why, working with YOU through your gifts and volunteering, Bread of Life is making a huge impact for good. Together, we are implementing food justice by providing access to healthy food for communities that are lower-income, people of color and immigrants. Even as we prepare to move into our new building at 54 Eastern Avenue Malden in early 2024, we are still expanding to serve more people. In April, we began distributing 3,000 pounds of food every week through the new Family Care Pantry, in coordination with The Family Church in Everett. This year to date, we have served 21,472 households compared to 19,761 in 2022.

Thank you for your compassion and for your hunger for food justice. We couldn't do this work without you.

God bless you,

Funds, personnel, collaborators, time, equipment have materialized from nowhere. We've seen the same provision for our food security programs. With every obstacle - COVID, insufficient funds, lack of volunteers, tight space, broken vehicles - we've seen a way open to move forward. I have a quotation on the wall of my office that reminds me of this reality. It's from the book of Exodus. Picture the Israelites, led by Moses, having fled slavery in Egypt but now trapped between the Egyptian army pursuing them and the Red Sea in front of them. I can imagine their terror and desperation. But the word Moses gave them was "Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the Lord will bring you today...The Lord will fight for you; you need only be still." (Exodus 14:13,14). We know what happened: the waters parted miraculously and the people walked across on dry land. To my mind, the results for Bread of Life are miraculous too. The foundation for our new building is being poured and we look to completion of construction by year's end. Our food programs surge forward, having provided food access and equity for 122,000 people last year from diverse communities of race, ethnicity, language, culture, religion, age, gender and other factors. Our part, with you our donors and volunteers, is to listen, to trust, to let go of our way, to go God's way, to persevere. Thank you for partnering with us and persevering to make a positive impact for food justice in the communities we serve. One of our high student volunteers recently posted online: "It is difficult to think of the community without Bread of Life...It is great to see the pantry serving so many people in need."

God bless you,
Gabriella

Under One Roof Update
During March we will be trucking excess soil offsite, completing the concrete pour, and commencing steel erection. When our facility is completed by January 2024, we will have two floors of space for Bread of Life programs and administration, giving us increased capacity to receive and store food donations, increased scheduling latitude for food distribution, and increased ability to utilize volunteers. Our housing partner, Metro North Housing Corp, will own and operate 14 permanent, rent-subsidized studio apartments on the third floor for local homeless individuals and veterans who will be able to access Bread of Life programs within the facility. Thank you to our 1,100+ individuals, businesses, foundations, civic groups, schools, faith communities, the City of Malden and our state legislators for making this possible!

The Malden-based organization was chosen from a total of 580 applicants during a competitive review process. It will receive $100,000 over two years.
For 30 years The Immigrant Learning Center has served Malden and surrounding communities. The free English classes and related services The ILC provides enable immigrant and refugee residents to become contributing members of these communities, and the education about immigrants it provides to all residents combats xenophobia and makes these communities stronger.
“The support of the Cummings Foundation means so much to us," said The ILC Founder and CEO Diane Portnoy. “It’s not just the critical fiscal support, it’s Cumming’s focus on community. Their support highlights immigrants as part of the fabric of our communities and shows that helping immigrants to succeed makes our communities stronger." Grant funding from the Cummings Foundation will result in enrollment of new students from The ILC waiting list and enable continued service for current students who will continue to advance to the next class level, secure employment, advance in their current job situation or enroll in further education/training and become U.S. citizens.
The Cummings $25 Million Grant Program supports Massachusetts nonprofits that are based in and primarily serve Middlesex, Essex, and Suffolk counties. Through this place-based initiative, Cummings Foundation aims to give back in the areas where it owns commercial property. Its buildings are all managed, at no cost to the Foundation, by its affiliate, Cummings Properties. This Woburn-based commercial real estate firm leases and manages 11 million square feet of debt-free space, the majority of which exclusively benefits the Foundation.
“We are so fortunate in greater Boston to have such effective nonprofits, plus a wealth of talented, dedicated professionals and volunteers to run them," said Cummings Foundation executive director Joyce Vyriotes. “We are indebted to them for the work they do each day to provide for basic needs, break down barriers to education and health resources, and work toward a more equitable society."
With the help of about 90 volunteers, the Foundation first identified 140 organizations to receive grants of at least $100,000 each. Among the winners were first-time recipients as well as not-for-profits such as The Immigrant Learning Center that had previously received Cummings Foundation grants. This year’s grant recipients represent a wide variety of causes, including food insecurity, immigrant and refugee services, social justice, education, and mental health services. The not-for-profits are spread across 45 different cities and towns.
The complete list of 140 grant winners, plus more than 900 previous recipients, is available at www.CummingsFoundation.org. Cummings Foundation has now awarded more than $375 million to Greater Boston not-for-profits.

About The Immigrant Learning Center, Inc.
The Immigrant Learning Center, Inc. Julio told the Mayor that he felt a strong desire to assist those suffering from the devastation resulting from Russia’s war on Ukraine. Still recovering from the time difference, Julio talked about his experiences during the week-long trip.
A licensed EMT and business owner of Fitness Foundry, Julio put his job and clients on notice of his impending trip because he believes that there is nothing like the feeling of helping people. He himself had experienced homelessness during his teen years having lived out his car for a period of time. He has since been involved with volunteering for several organizations including the Bread of Life.
Julio initially reached out on social media to learn how he could best help the people of Ukraine. Upon completing several volunteer applications, World Central Kitchen founded by Spanish American Chef Jose Andres accepted his application to assist in Poland. Julio then started a GoFundMe page and raised nearly double his goal. Upon arriving in Poland, he considered himself lucky to have secured a bed in an all-male dormitory facility, and after a quick training got to work. He learned some basic words from Polish volunteers who spoke Ukrainian such as coffee, tea, milk and quickly learned what people were asking for. He worked alongside volunteers, including chefs from many different countries who were cooking food from scratch for the refugees.
Julio told the Mayor that he was particularly moved by the plight of the refugees especially witnessing generations of women, grandparents and young children adjusting to being relocated to large buildings converted to house them. Their husbands and sons are all fighting on the front lines. Although the weather in “Polish Spring" is very cold and wet with strong winds, one night Julio felt compelled to walk several miles to the Ukraine border just to get a feel for what exiting refugees are going through. He said this was an experience he’ll never forget and hopes to do it again.
Mayor Christenson thanked Julio for going above and beyond in taking the initiative to serve on the front lines of a humanitarian crisis and for making a difference in the lives of the people of Ukraine.

You may watch it on the new TURNAROUND FILMS website: www.turnaround-films.com. All films are available free of charge to be used by municipalities, educators, and advocacy organizations to help the public understand climate change.
Viewers are invited to watch three short films, the first episodes in an ongoing series, on the TURNAROUND FILMS website. “The Impervious Problem" looks at how our infrastructures are holding up against increasing temperatures and intense rainfalls. In “Green Roofs" and “Karen and the River," they tell the stories of the individuals and organizations that are working to find solutions and new ways of adapting our lives to live with these changes.
In early 2021, TURNAROUND FILMS began creating quality films about “Who is doing what about climate change" and make them available, at little or no cost, to educators, advocacy organizations and legislators. The episodes may be downloaded and used in presentations, in classrooms, in town meetings, or embedded in websites and social media. They are currently working to tackle other climate change issues in the areas of energy, education, environmental justice, sea-level rise, and more.
Volunteer efforts are key to maintaining a clean and vibrant city. “Everyone can contribute to protecting the Malden River with proper curbside recycling and trash removal," said Karen Buck. “Clean sidewalks, curbs, and street storm drains are critical for public health and our environment." Residents are also encouraged to refrain from using inorganic pesticides and herbicides, as these chemicals pollute the waterways. For more information regarding waterfront activities and cleanups, or to join the Friends of the Malden River in protecting the Malden River and with the creation of the waterfront park, please contact Karen Buck at FriendsoftheMaldenRiver@gmail.com.

When Mixx 360 and Town Line Luxury Lanes owner Anthony DeCotis learned about this, he generously offered to make up the $5,000 deficit. Mr. DeCotis met Mayor Gary Christenson, Superintendent Ligia Noriega-Murphy, Malden High School Principal Chris Mastrangelo and members of the Class of 2022 at City Hall where he presented the class with a check. The students were thrilled and more than grateful. “Anthony and his family are always willing to help and make a difference when it comes to our students," said Mayor Gary Christenson. “They continuously go above and beyond in their generosity to our City."
